From the guy who recommends that people building new PCs use Windows Vista.
And ATi cards.
COLLEGE LEVEL BRILLIANCE RIGHT THERE.

Using bleeding edge hardware that is built for DX10.1, 64bit native support, and future games, it would be silly to use anything but Vista Ultimate 64bit. Essentially, you are forced into using it to achieve the full gaming potential of extremely modern hardware.
Vista is horrid, but a necessary evil if you are to get the full graphical experience of modern GPUs. Unfortunate? Most certainly.
And when a person on nVidia payroll recommends an ATi card, there must be good reason, wouldn't you say? A pure AMD platform with the upcoming Deneb is a cheap, high power solution. Granted, going Intel + nVidia will give you the most performance, but only if you are willing to pay for it. For a midrange budget, a pure AMD build will give you the most performance for the smallest dollar.

THERE IS NO GOOD REASON FOR THIS.
Hello viewers. You are now being returned to your regularly scheduled programming. Vista fans may now carry on failing.

If Vista is so bad then why am I able to post in this thread with no errors?
Explain that with your big fancy computer science.

Vista fails because it uses too much memory: I can't play 4 games at a time on windowed mode so I can still watch my RAM and CPU usage monitors and follow the stocks and the news while some other program calculates the global warming evolution for the next 10 years with 123416 parameters.
That's pretty bad!

Thanks for the thread guys, I was unsure whether or not an upgrade to Vista would be the best thing to do. I have a couple of family members that are using it and was considering an upgrade myself, but after reading some of these posts, it looks I'm staying on XP SP3.

uhm actually it lasted for about 10 minutes before i had to manually cancel the file (it was runninmg fine and then went to hell [which you will read below it was commong to happen]). also-- the system it's self CAME WITH vista so shouldn't that mean it's supposed to "be able to run vista"?
anyways-- whenever i would go to extract files i would always get extremely long load times and this particular time just so happen to be the mothership of them all so i decided to screen it.
p.s.

now that i mention it.... i wonder if i am in the minority for how many people in the WORLD have ever had this kind of slow-proccessing? (basicly meaning taking 117 years just to extract 13Mb.... ) if i am then i'm kinda happy about it. xD

The error you are referring to Jonnie is typically caused by a miscommunication between the southbridge controller and the CPU, commonly referred to as a "miss". If the miss was severe enough, the process is corrupted. Pretty simple when you think about. What causes the miss is typically a bad command issued from the OS (Vista).
Another and perhaps most common cause of extremely high file transfer times is a corruption in the file system. When run through integrity checks and hashed, they files fails and the OS responds by giving you some insane amount of time or freezing up (or a BSOD)

That was sarcasm :<
I could run far cry, battle field, and some other programs at the same time without any trouble, I'm not surprised you can do the same on yours.
Vista is not bad, it's just not much of an improvement since XP.

Lol XP For the win, its more stable, you dont need 4 GB for games to run games like 2 GB of RAM, its not as ubberly demanding as vista. People only upgrade to it cause its pretty, who cares? youre trading Beauty for perfromance? is that it? and yes they say: youl get cool performance if you have a good Machine, yeh you will, but youl ahve to spend a whole lot more money, plus vista has loads of incompatibilities, most companies nowadays still use XP. XP Will always rule

Who cares about having the extreme performance???????? The differences between a GOOD pc with XP and a GOOD pc with vista are very little, its like pinpointing the differences between a PCI E 2.0 Card on a PCI E 1.0 Slot, and a PCI E 2.0 Card in a 2.0 Slot, or the differences between Intel Core 2 Quad and Intel i7, sure theyl be differences, but theyre really small, and its stupid to spend extra ubber money just for those differences, an XP with core 2 quad lets say.. 3.2 Ghz, 2 Gb of RAM or 4 ( if you have the 64 bit version ) and a Three-way Sli Nvidia Geforce GTX 280 ( kinda ubber i know xD ( wish i had that :P ) ) Will have an excelenet performance on games, probabaly one of the best ever, even tho its using Direct x 9.0c who gives a damn about the Dx 10???? those GTX babies will make it look like its using DX 10 haha!
XP For Vista: Performance For Beauty. Nuff Said.
